The Entry into Force of a Treaty Establishing an Economic Union among a Caribbean group PDF Print Email
Thursday, 03 February 2011 10:00

Paves the way for economic, political and cultural benefits with the Eastern Caribbean

Puerto Rican society can benefit economically, culturally and politically from the entry into force of the Economic Union Treaty between the member countries of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). However, these benefits can only be accrued through the adoption of a Caribbean vision, explained the Honorary Consul OECS Puerto Rico, Efraín Vázquez-Vera.
The Economic Union, which became operational this week, integrates the economies of Antigua and Barbuda, Grenada, Dominica, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and St. Lucia.

Following Grenada’s ratification of the Economic Union Treaty, the Treaty came into force with the fourth ratification needed for the Union to complete the ratification process. The Treaty was signed on June 18, 2010 in Santa Lucia.

In order for the treaty to enter into force, it had to be ratified by at least four of the six signatory countries.

"All Caribbean  people should feel proud that one of the world’s most advanced integration processes exists in our region after the European Union. In particular, this represents a great opportunity for Puerto Ricans to expand their cultural, economic and political relations (with the sub-region). This translates to a market of 600,000 people for Puerto Rican goods and services, “ indicated Vazquez-Vera.

The honorary consul insisted he has "not the slightest doubt" that the entry into force of the Economic Union in the Eastern Caribbean represents a great opportunity for Puerto Rico.

In this connection, he went on to explain that this will always be true as long as Puerto Rico assumed "an authentic Caribbean vocation,” since the interests of the region are very similar to the interests of Puerto Ricans."

Vázquez-Vera, who is currently a professor at the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao, has invited Puerto Ricans invited to deepen their knowledge and support the regional integration process. He has also expressed confidence that in the near future "the decolonization of Puerto Rico can be attained, which will allow it to be a part of a conglomerate of countries like the OECS that aim to achieve competitiveness through regional integration.”

The OECS was established on June 18, 1981 by the Treaty of Basseterre. Its headquarters is situated in Castries, St. Lucia.

Its members are Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, British Virgin Islands, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
