| OECS Secretariat Mounts Tourism Promotional Campaign in France |

The OECS Secretariat is embarking on a new mission aimed at boosting the sub-region’s yachting sector and tourism sector as a whole. Officers from the OECS Secretariat’s Tourism Desk and the Export Development Unit recently an OECS Tourism promotional initiative at a grand boat show in Euroupe. The world renowned, Le Grand Pavois boat show in La Rochelle France was held from September 15 th –20 th 2004. During the boat show in France the OECS Secretariat enticed world famous yachters and onlookers to visit the OECS as well as take part in two major yachting events along the nine member countries.
Both events will run from December 27th 2004 to February 12th 2005. One of the events will feature competitors in the annual Atlantic Rally for Cruisers or ARC Race. After the ARC racers arrive in the Caribbean from Europe they will set sail in an attempt to visit all the OECS Member countries en route from Castries in St. Lucia to St. Georges Grenada and ending in St. John’s Antigua and Barbuda. Simultaneously competitors in the prestigious Caribbean Fifteen Hundred Race in the British Virgin Islands will contest the other guided tour that leaves Road Town Tortola and also ends in Antigua and Barbuda. Bonus points will be awarded to competitors that arrive at all destinations of each route. A special reception will be held for the racing yachts at each OECS port and a celebration party and awards presentation will be staged in St. Johns to climax the historical sailing experience. Both yachting events will be under the collaboration of departments of Tourism and Marine Associations in the OECS. Tourism Officer at the OECS Secretariat Daphne Vidal says the yachters have shown great enthusiasm in the upcoming OECS tour.Next year the OECS will be treated as the country of honour at the world famous Le Grand Pavois boat show in France. South Africa was the boat show’s country of honour at this year’s event in France.
