A proposed extension of the OECS Trade Policy Project will be discussed at its annual Project Management Committee meeting on Tuesday April 6 th 2004 in St. Lucia. The meeting is scheduled for the Indies Conference Centre at 9:00 a.m.
Discussions on extending of the project will be part of a packed agenda of the Trade Policy Unit’s Project Management Committee meeting. Reflecting on the past year, Cadet believes the OECS Trade Policy Project has had to deal with a very intensive agenda in assisting with relevance to development at different levels including the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the proposed Free Trade Area of the America’s (FTAA) and the commencement of Economic Partnership Agreement negotiations. These, as well as other trade negotiating factors inform the significant mandate by the OECS Trade Policy Unit to keep up to speed with world issues and inform the OECS member countries on the most effective approaches. The OECS Trade Policy Project Unit launched in April of 2000, seeks to strengthen the capacity of OECS member countries to participate fully and compete in the global economy through the provision of technical assistance. The project also funds the OECS Trade Negotiating Group (TNG). The TNG helps member countries to effectively manage the negotiating of their specific and collective concerns at the global level such as the WTO. The OECS Trade Policy project is funded by the Canadian International development Agency CIDA.

Project manager at the OECS Trade Policy Project Unit, Charles Cadet is optimistic that the request of the OECS Member countries will be granted. He says the countries are aware of the significance of the project to their needs and therefore requested the extension.
