Thirty Degree Scholarships To Be Awarded Annually For OECS Nationals PDF Print Email

UWIThe OECS Secretariat is teaming up with another leading regional integration icon to help further the education of Caribbean people.

The OECS Secretariat through its Castries based Education Reform Unit OERU is assisting the University of the West Indies (UWI) in the awarding of scholarships for full time study towards a degree in any discipline except Law and Medicine.

The scholarship programme has been designed to help boost the attendance of students from the OECS at UWI.

Dr. Henry HindsCurriculum specialist at the OERU Dr. Henry Hinds says there has been decline in the number of OECS students at UWI and the programme is also intended to increase the visibility and meaningful nature of the region’s leading tertiary education institution.

“Traditionally persons throughout the Caribbean have met and have maintained longstanding and professional relationships when they attended the University of the West Indies. We want to continue this tradition and in collaboration with the OECS Secretariat we want to ensure that our region in moving towards harmonization in all areas which will provide the opportunity for our young people in particular to develop this regional concept of regional harmonization, that we must work together to develop our countries and develop our resources”- Dr.Hinds.

The award will cover economic cost and tuition.

Cricket is among the various disciplines included in the award. The Cricket Scholarship is to facilitate the competence of those who have excelled in the sport as well as prepare them for life after cricket. The UWI has also included cricket among its scholarship awards because of its intrinsic value to the region’s culture.

This OECS/UWI scholarship programme honours the memory of the Caribbean’s most celebrated economist the late Sir Arthur Lewis.

A maximum of 30 scholarships will be awarded annually. The selection of candidates for scholarships shall be based on demonstrated capacity to complete the course of study, academic merit and financial need. The continuation of the scholarship shall be subject to reports of good conduct and satisfactory academic progress.

Application forms can be obtained from the University Representative in each OECS Member country.
