OECS Chiefs of Prisons and Probation Services to Meet PDF Print Email

Heads of Prisons and Probation Services in the OECS meet in St. Lucia October 20th and 21st to discuss a way forward for merging Prisons and Probation/Social Services in the sub-region. The main presenters at the meeting will be prison services consultant Ms Wendy Singh and alternative sentencing expert Ms Ira Porter.

The Jamaica-based Ms Porter will speak to the Jamaican experience of merging prisons and probation. She will discuss the negative effects of imprisonment and why there is need for alternatives to custody. She will also highlight difficulties and success with implementation of non-custodial programmes

Ms. Singh is expected to look at the purpose of imprisonment and what obtains in prisons in the OECS. She will also make a presentation on  a new approach to punishment in the OECS with a focus on rehabilitation.

The OECS groups the nine islands of Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
