The University of the West Indies and CARICOM ’s Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre are jointly hosting a conference on Climate Change Impacts on the Caribbean.
The conference will pay special attention to the tourism and insurance industries. In the context of the recently released report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), this conference will focus on many of the findings of direct relevance to the Caribbean, and take an assessment of our responses to these changes so far. The conference begins with an Opening Ceremony on Friday June 15, 2007 at the Mona Visitor’s Lodge. To set the pace for the subsequent two days of discussions, keynote presentations will be given by Professor Anthony Chen of the Physics Department and Dr. Leonard Nurse of CERMES, Cave Hill and Chairman of the Board of the Climate Change Centre. Both scholars contributed the material on the Caribbean to the recently published IPCC report. The conference follows at the Social Sciences Lecture Theatre, Faculty of Social Sciences on June 16 - 17, 2007 beginning at 8:30am each day. It seeks to address the Impact of Climate Change on several aspects of economic development, and to establish the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre in the public’s consciousness. Panel presentations will be made by scholars, policy makers, consultants, private sector leaders, and civil society activists from across the Caribbean. In addition, a feature presentation on hurricanes by a leading international expert is planned. All presentations will be web-casted around the region to allow interested individuals, an opportunity to follow the discussions and engage with the panels and the topics being discussed. Web stream for the Climatic Change Conference can be accessed via the link below. http://www.mona.uwi.edu/streams At the end of each session, the presenters and attendees together will have identified challenges and shared tools for addressing these concerning issues. Attendees will be participating in a region-wide dialogue, as we consider how we as a region will be impacted by the changes in the world’s climate. The public is invited to participate in the discussions. Please encourage people with special knowledge of our region’s climate to participate, and make a special effort to encourage the young people. It is their world that is likely to be different because of the changes in our climate. Dr. Michael Witter Ms. Lesmarie Hall |
