Strong and growing suggestions from Dominicans that the size of island's cabinet of Ministers be reduced may soon be realized. Prime Minister Pierre Charles has given the assurance that he is giving active attention to the matter. Addressing the nation on the state of the economy Friday, the Prime Minister said he accepts the positive suggestions for the reduction of the overall number of ministers and advisors. He said an announcement will soon be made on the issue. " I am aware that there is one particular issue that Dominicans wish me to speak on today. That is the matter of the possible reduction in the number of Advisors and Ministers. The Government accepts that in this difficult economic period, at a time when sacrifices are been asked of all Dominicans, a time when we are discussing if there should be a cutback on the staffing of the public service, the Cabinet should be seen to be leading by example," Prime Minister Charles said. "I accept the positive symbolism at this time in the reduction of the overall number of advisors and ministers. I know that the public also understands that this is a matter of genuine political sensitivity. On this matter all I would say to the public at this time is that the matter of the overall size of the cabinet and advisors is receiving my active attention." "I expect not too long from now to be in a position to announce a cutback in the overall number," The Prime Minister said. Meantime the Prime Minister says his Government is not in favor in implementing measures which would cut the public service by 10 percent. |
