St. Vincent and the Grenadines may soon be having high level discussions with Grenada to formulate policies relating to national security. This follows talks here Thursday involving Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves and St. Lucia's Prime Minister Dr Kenny Anthony along with their respective delegations. According to Prime Minister Gonsalves, Grenada has expressed interest in holding similar discussions, to work out strategies to fight crime across the borders. "I also spoke to Prime Minister Mitchell of Grenada, and I indicated to him that Prime Minister Anthony and I were in discussion on this matter and he is also very interested in St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Grenada, Carriacou and Petit Martinique to be involved in discussions because we are also very close to Grenada on our southern border, Prime Minister Gonsalves said. " We certainly have to tighten up; we can't allow the criminals to have the space which they currently have. That's the bottom line." Thursday's meeting was held at the request of Prime Minister Dr. Anthony of St. Lucia to deepen the on going dialogue between the security forces of both countries to fight crimes cross border. The two leaders and their delegations also traveled to the leeward side of the island to view the unprotected Bays from which the illegal transactions are carried out. Dr. Anthony indicated that he would be seeking to have Dr. Gonsalves visit St. Lucia for a similar tour. "In time I hope to invite Prime Minister Gonsalves to St. Lucia to give him an opportunity to look at the areas which are used for criminal activity and of course to introduce him to some of his nationals who are residents particularly in my constituency in the south of the island.," Dr. Anthony told reporters. "There is a particular attraction to my constituency. Because it is a crossing point to St. Vincent, it is important that we nip the problems early and we cannot be so close to each other and not co operate with each other in dealing with the problems that we have." |
