St. Lucia is moving to set a minimum standard of living for the country's citizens. It's part of the campaign being spearheaded by the new Ministry of Social Transformation to improve the quality of life for St. Lucian citizens. Minister for Social Transformation Mennisa Rambally says the Ministry will seek over the coming months to put the standard in place in the shortest possible time. "The overall objective of the Ministry of Social Transformation will be to ensure that in the short term - and that short term will be defined over the next few months - we will set a specific target to ensure that throughout the length and breath of this country there is a minimum standard below which none of our community should live." "And so that means we must ensure that the basic amenities that we often speak about are put in place for all our communities. And so we will ensure that training programs are taken on board, we will ensure that the role of various agencies of the Ministry continue to be on the priority agenda of this Government." The Social Transformation Minister also announced several initiatives which are on the agenda of the Ministry. They include the introduction of a home help programme to offer care for the elderly, the establishment of a child care board to look after the interest of children and legislation to ensure that persons with disabilities are treated no differently than other St. Lucians. |
