As the curtains came down on the Inet OECS Cycling Classic in Antigua and Barbudaon Sunday, June 5, 2011, Jyme Bridges of Antigua and Barbuda deservedly breasted the tape in first place. At his wheels in second place was Dominic Oliviere of St. Vincent and the Grenadines who rode valiantly to shrug off a great fight from Chiel Lefebure, a Belgium National who has lived in Antigua for the past two years, and rode for the home team. The event came to a head when a total of eight (8) riders congregated in the final bunch after completing the three laps of approximately 72 miles. This presented an opportunity for each rider, although it seemed like an eternity before the rush to the finish was initiated. The first eight riders were able to complete the course through the South Eastern and Central parts of the island in 3 hours 17 minutes. It was truly a race of strategy and endurance, with temperatures rising to 35 degrees Celsius during the grueling course. The event commenced with over forty (40) riders from seven (7) Member States of the OECS. A greater effort will be made to see riders fromDominicaat the next OECS Cycling Classic to be held inSt. Vincent and the Grenadineson Sunday May 20, 2012. It was also agreed that a small committee be put in place to oversee the organization of the event moving forward. A committee comprising of Denis James – OECS Programme Officer for Sports, Trevor Bailey – President of Caribbean Cycling Association, Cliff Williams – President of Antigua Cycling Association and Cyril Mangal – President of St. Lucia Cycling Association, was formed for this purpose. Here are the top ten results: 1. Jyme Bridges (ANU); 2.Dominic Oliviere (SVG); 3.Chiel Lefebure (ANU); 4.Sydney Walters (GRE); 5.Kurt Maraj (SLU); 6.Robert Marsh (ANU); 7.Tyron Thomas (GRE); 8.Fidel Mangal (SLU); 9.Marvin Spencer (ANU); 10.Danny Laud (ANG).
