sm_swimming Grenada emerged champions of the Annual OECS Swim Championships held in Grenada on November 6 – 8, 2009. When the water calmed down at the pool, Grenada had accumulated a total of 206 medals (63 gold, 84 silver and 59 bronze), while St. Lucia captured 142 medals (63 gold, 39 silver and 40 bronze) to clinch second place. Antigua and Barbuda was third with 28 medals (2 gold, 5 silver and 21 bronze).

This year’s Championship witnessed teams from Grenada, St. Lucia, Antigua & Barbuda and St. Vincent & The Grenadines. At the end of it all, the points standings read – Grenada 1780.5 points, St. Lucia 1589 points, Antigua & Barbuda 661 points and St. Vincent & The Grenadines 67.5 points. The rivalry between St. Lucia and Grenada for swimming supremacy in the OECS continues to be the highlight of the Championships, and the fever-pitched excitement created in the pool delivered just that. It was however, very encouraging observing Antigua & Barbuda holding their own and winning medals at some of the events. This augurs well for swimming in the region and should serve as an incentive for the other islands to strengthen their national associations and organize structured programmes for their swimmers.

The standard of the competition was very high and the events were highly competitive. This was reflected in the number of meet records being broken and new records established. No less than 75 records were broken and established at the games and numerous personal times were registered.

The OECS Sports Desk commends the Grenada Swimming Association for once again successfully hosting this Championship, which is aimed at the development of our people.
