Increased coordination at the national, regional and international levels has been highly recommended following a recent regional workshop in Castries , on national sustainable development strategies and indicators. The OECS Secretariat and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs UND ESA jointly conducted the two-day meeting from January 14th to 15th.
After presentations, that included case studies and needs assessments, participants agreed that improved coordination could assist in effectively addressing sustainable development issues. They suggested that where not existing, an entity should be formally identified to facilitate the preparation of a National Sustainable Development Strategy and coordinate responses to diverse regional and international agreements.
A further call was made for the co-ordination of external funding to respond to national needs and priorities. However, it was advised that extensive capacity building programmes must begin at all levels if a national sustainable development strategy is to be implemented. Among other recommendations, the meeting expressed the urgency for the highest level of support from the political directorate on matters regarding sustainable development. A call was also made for extensive national public awareness and public education programmes to promote greater support and understanding of sustainable development issues. It is believed that this will assist stakeholders in understating the link between sustainable development matters, socio/ economic trends and even issues such as the proposed OECS Economic Union and the Caribbean Single Market and Economy.
Programme Officer at the OECS Environment and Sustainable development Unit ESDU Valerie Isaac St. Hill commended the collaboration of the UN as well as the OECS and CARICOM secretariats in the meeting as one that will drive the coherent approach towards sustainable development in the region.
