THE COAL POT, a small exotic soap company in Dominica making big impact with USAID Assistance
The Coal Pot is a small soap processing enclave owned and managed by women.  This operation was formed less than five years ago with the help of an American Peace Corp Volunteer and several unemployed young women through a soap-making class.  The Coal Pot soaps have only natural additives and are scented with pure essential oils from plants and flowers that grow in Dominica affectionately referred to as the Nature Isle. The “natural” theme is evidenced with the use of 100% pro-consumer and Bio-degradable inputs and printed on recycled paper with soy-based inks. The enterprise is located in Grand Bay a country village in Dominica.

The enterprise was recruited after diagnostics were done on the company in 2001. At the time of recruitment the enterprise had processing facilities and very little by way of a management, marketing, promotion and proper accounting system. The company was only supplying to the local supermarkets.

The Small and Medium Sized Enterprises Development Program provided assistance with packaging, the procurement and installation of a computer, installation of accounting programs and in-plant training in accounting principles and practices. The firm has been supported further with training in HACCP principles and have attended Trade Facilitation seminars hosted by SMED. In September staff of the Coal Pot attended the Caribbean Gifts and Crafts Show in Grenada.
