The Legal Unit provides full legal support to the OECS, including the Secretariat and all Subsidiary Institutions of the Organisation.

The work of the Unit includes law reform and harmonization, based upon the requirements of Member States. Harmonised model legislation produced by the Unit has been enacted in Member States covering a wide range of areas such as the Misuse of Drugs, Civil Aviation and Toxic Chemicals and Pesticides. The Unit is also responsible for Co-ordinating Judicial and Legal Reform activities in the OECS. High on this agenda, are reforms in respect of the Supreme Court and District Courts, aimed at achieving greater levels of efficiency. Court Procedures, Case Management and Court Reporting are some of the areas being addressed.

The Legal Unit also provides assistance to Member States in respect of the negotiating and adopting of Treaties. Selective regional initiatives, in areas such as Solid Waste Management Intellectual Property, International Trade and Telecommunications are also important areas of concern for the Unit. For example, the Unit overseas the development and implementation of legislative arrangements attendant to the liberalization of the Telecommunications Market in participating Member States and provides critical legal support for relevant negotiations.

Finally, the Unit provides routine legal services to the Organisation and Member States, consistent with the status of the OECS as an International Organisation.
