Motto

Ever Conscious of God We Aspire, Build and Advance as One People

Brief History

Caribs inhabited Grenada when the island was “discovered” by Christopher Columbus in 1498.  The Carib name for the island was “Camerhogne”.  In the 17th century the French settled on the island and imported African slaves to work mainly in the sugar estates.  The island was taken over by the British in 1762 and gained autonomy for its internal affairs in 1967.  Full independence was attained in 1974.

Civil conflict broke out following elections in 1976 and in 1979 the New Jewel Movement under Maurice Bishop launched a paramilitary attack on the government resulting in its overthrow. Some years later a dispute developed between Bishop and certain high-ranking members of the NJM, who deemed Bishop insufficiently revolutionary. In October 1983, Bernard Coard and his wife Phyllis, backed by the Grenadian Army, led a coup against the government of Maurice Bishop who - along with seven others including Cabinet Ministers - was executed by soldiers. The overthrow of a moderate government by one which was strongly communist worried the USA to the extent that combined forces from the USA, the Regional Security System and Jamaica invaded Grenada on 25 October 25. After the invasion of the island nation, the pre-revolutionary Grenadian constitution was resumed.
